The George Knudson Centennial Pro Am has been held at Oakdale Golf and Country Club for more than 30 years. The tournament honours golf legend George Knudson, who worked at the club and won his first PGA tour in 1961. He went on to win the PGA Tour seven more times. Sadly, he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1988 and died in 1989 after the cancer spread to his brain. Knudson was 51 years old.
“As Oakdale has always emphasized philanthropy since its founding, members started a tournament in Knudson’s memory, which has to date raised about $6 million for cancer research,” said Faith Sherman, longstanding ICRF Toronto Board Member and George Knudson Centennial Pro Am Committee Member.
This is Oakdale's Centennial year, and for the first time, the Pro Am tournament will include an inaugural Canasta tournament to run on the same day. Funds raised from the Centennial events support ICRF funded scientists.
“Funds raised support the scientists in Israel. Donations renew hope, save lives and move the dial forward in the fight against cancer for all of humanity,” said Sherman. “What’s especially meaningful is that Israeli cancer research includes Jewish, Arab, Druze, Christian, Muslim and international researchers working together side by side."
